Georges St Pierre- MILITAR MINDSET

Georges St-Pierre is highly regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. He reigned as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion during his supreme reign, which saw him defend his title an amazing nine times!

He lost just twice in his professional career, both losses he would go on to avenge. After beating Matt Serra in the rematch in 2007, St Pierre went on an incredible run winning 12 fights in a row up until 2013.

He then voluntarily vacated his UFC belt after 2,064 days as the champion to take some time away from the sport. He made his highly anticipated return in 2017, but this time moving up a weight to face the UFC middleweight champion, who was Michael Bisping at the time.

He won the fight by rendering Bisping unconscious via a rear naked choke in the 3rd round. Adding another achievement to his legacy, becoming a two-weight world champion.

Outside of fighting, St Pierre is involved in many things including his own charity, the GSP Foundation. With this initiative he aims to reduce bullying and encourage young people to participate in sports.

St Pierre has displayed great skill and determination in the octagon, showing us what belief and hard work can ultimately achieve, he has shown the MILITAR MINDSET!

How has St Pierre displayed the MILITAR MINDSET?

St Pierre has showed how strong his MINDSET is throughout his career and life so far. He is always looking to improve and become better than he can be. Before each fight he would make sure he was fully prepared and ready.

Training correctly and making sure he worked as hard as he could. St Pierre has had just two losses, but both of these losses were in championship fights, leading to him ultimately losing the title.

Both fights were learning curves for St Pierre, as he used them to fuel his return. His mindset was always: how could he learn from this? He would work on how he could improve himself, allowing him to also build up his self-confidence.

When he fixed the mistakes he had made, he was much better in the re-matches winning both within the distance. He has shown how, from failure, he was able to learn and come back much stronger.

St Pierre has said: ‘With discipline, belief, and the right knowledge, we become the best we can be.’ Here we can see the values that have helped him reach the success he has enjoyed.

He was always disciplined, making sure he never cut any corners, training as hard as he could. His belief in himself was a result of his discipline and training. Allowing him to be confident and comfortable once he finally stepped into the octagon.

When you believe in yourself, you are able to perform much better. Then the knowledge he was able to gain from his trainers and his experiences, both failures and successes, allowed him to evolve into the champion he became.

A combination of these three values is what drove St Pierre’s mindset allowing him to be the best he could be. This is evident as when he had all three of these in place, he was unbeatable!

You must stay positive and strong mentally to achieve your goals. Keeping a positive mindset will enable you to come back from failures and learn from them. Allowing you to strive closer and closer to your dreams!

St Pierre has INSPIRED many with his story

St Pierre has become an INSPIRATION to many people. As he is considered one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time, many people look up to him. They are inspired by how he was able to do what he did in the octagon and be so dominant.

Causing people to train in mixed martial arts in the hope of one day becoming like St Pierre, to be one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. But life wasn’t always so easy for St Pierre. It is his difficulties in life that have allowed him to become the person he is today.

During his childhood, St Pierre has told us he was bullied. People would pick on him robbing him of his clothes and money. It was this terrible experience that caused St Pierre to seek martial arts to protect himself from the bullies.

He enrolled in Kyokushin Karate at the age of seven. Once he started to regularly train, his confidence increased. Once he became well-skilled, he was able to defend himself from the bullies and they stopped picking on him.

But he grew up with a passion for martial arts and continued his training to reach the pinnacle of mixed martial arts as we know it today.

As shown in the header image St Pierre told us: ‘People who believe in themselves can accomplish almost anything… all begins with attitude.’ Showing us that everything comes from our self-belief. Once he believed in himself, he was able to stand up to the bullies.

His confidence only went up from there. Setting himself the goal of becoming a mixed martial artist, which he did tremendously. St Pierre has said this experience as a child strengthened him mentally, which helped him in his UFC career.

It was his attitude that pushed him to become one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time.

You must always have belief in yourself. Once you believe you can achieve your dreams, you are one step closer to accomplishing them. After you have the belief, you must work towards your goal!

St Pierre has showed us he really is LIMITLESS!

St Pierre has proven to us all that he is LIMITLESS! Just from his transformation from a child who was constantly being bullied to one of the greatest mixed martial artists we have ever seen is remarkable! He is constantly looking to improve and test himself.

When he was an active fighter, he was always fighting the top contenders within his division, cementing his legacy as the champion. Going on an incredible 12 fight win streak from 2007- 2013!

He had proved he was the best welterweight in his reign, defending his belt for 7 years. When he made his return in 2017, he again looked to make yet more history. Going up in weight to middleweight, a division he had never competed in before.

Going straight into a title bout with Michael Bisping, the champion at the time. People were unsure how St Pierre would perform as he was out of the octagon for nearly 4 years prior to the bout. He proved the doubters wrong with an amazing performance!

He won the fight in the 3rd round via submission, putting Bisping to sleep with a rear naked choke. Adding to his legacy, becoming a part of just a handful of names who have been able to win titles in two divisions.

St Pierre tells us: ‘The danger is not to set your goal too high and fail to reach it. It’s to set your goal too low and reach it.’ Reinforcing how we should always aim high. By aiming higher we are striving for greatness, allowing us to see our true potential.

By aiming too low we will never see what we are capable of. As said before, failure is common when chasing greatness. St Pierre has failed before, but it doesn’t make him a failure. He chose to learn from his setbacks and rise again.

Because he learned from his failures, he is now one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all times. You must always aim higher, though it may seem impossible, through hard work and determination you will get there. Don’t be afraid of failure. Be limitless!

St Pierre is able to reach his own INNER-PEACE

St Pierre has been able to reach his own INNER-PEACE. As stated before, St Pierre was bullied as a child. Turning to martial arts helped him to defend himself physically but also allowed him to improve his mental state.

Though he is now retired, he still actively trains. This helps him to keep his own peace of mind. He has also created a foundation due to his experiences as a child called the GSP foundation. Here he tries to help reduce bullying, having been a victim of it himself.

He believes all children should be partaking in sports activities as the physical and mental benefits are huge. Being able to help people that went through similar experiences to him and reduce it, brings him his own inner-peace as it is something he is passionate about.

St Pierre has also told us: ‘If you fear and you don’t admit it, that’s when you’re lying to yourself.’ Here he is teaching us to embrace our emotions. St Pierre has been vocal about how he was able to deal with his fear and embrace it.

When making his walk towards the octagon he has admitted he felt fear. He feared different things such as losing or being humiliated. But once he entered the octagon, he embraced his fear and started to feel confidence.

St Pierre shows us when he is able to except his emotions, he was able to reach his inner-peace. He dealt with his emotions and didn’t try to run away from them. You must find what you are passionate about, to find your own inner-peace.

St Pierre realised the importance of TIME to reach the top

St Pierre has been patient throughout his life, making sure that he gave things TIME. Though it looked like St Pierre was an instant success when he first got into the UFC, it was a long process for him to get to where he was.

As stated before, St Pierre started training in martial arts when he was 7. He only become more involved in it as the years went by. He became a UFC world champion at the age of 25 and fought for his first UFC world title at 23.

That was 16 years of training that led up to St Pierre’s first world title shot in the UFC! He has dedicated his life to martial arts as it means much more than just fighting to him. Martial arts are a part of his lifestyle.

St Pierre has told us: ‘The truth is that I didn’t start as a winner. When I was a kid, I was just another reject. I started at the bottom. I think all winners do.’ Teaching us that we all start at the bottom. Over time, we start to learn and build ourselves up.

Nothing happens overnight. Constant work over the years has led St Pierre to the position he finds himself in now. By staying patient and learning from his mistakes over time, St Pierre has been able to evolve into the person he is today.

You must stay patient on your mission to achieving your dreams. It won’t happen overnight. But through constant work you will one day see it turn into a reality!

St Pierre was ACTIVE then and he still is!

St Pierre remains ACTIVE to this day! He was active throughout his mixed martial arts career, constantly training and preparing for his next opponent. Making sure he was ready both physically and mentally for his fights.

Within nearly three years of his MMA career, St Pierre got his first crack at the UFC world title after compiling a record of 7-0. He was very active in his first 3 years, as he made his full transition to MMA.

Though this seems fast for someone to get a title shot at the top tier division of MMA, as we mentioned before St Pierre has been involved in martial arts for a long time prior to his mixed martial arts debut!

He was already training in different disciplines from a young age after originally starting karate. Prior to turning pro, St Pierre was like us all, having a regular job. He studied Kinesiology and then after this he worked as a bouncer and a binman.

But he knew this was not what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. After working to pay off his school fees, he turned to mixed martial arts, which is where his ultimate passion lay. He went on an amazing win streak from 2007-2013 where he won 12 fights in a row!

Though he is no longer a professional mixed martial artist, St Pierre still trains regularly. He has said: ‘I’m a martial artist, and I don’t train because I have a fight; I train because it’s my lifestyle, and I’ll train every day if I’m not hurt.’ Here we can see how much martial arts means to St Pierre.

It is his life. He is always training as he strives to become better. By staying active, he is allowing himself to improve each day. Outside of training, he is also busy with his GSP foundation work, as he strives to help others too.

You must stay active when chasing your dreams. Aim to always take a step closer to you dream, no matter how big or small it may be. Continuously progress each day till you make it to your ultimate goal!

St Pierre is just RELENTLESS!

St Pierre has been RELENTLESS throughout his life. Having started training in martial arts to protect himself from bullies, he evolved into one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time!

He is always looking at how he can get better and working on constantly improving himself. Even though he is no longer an active MMA fighter, he has had his seatbacks (though not very many!) and he has regrouped and learnt from them.

Ultimately making him even better. Avenging both blemishes on his close to perfect career.

St Pierre states: ‘My mentality is like a Samurai: They used to every day work on their technique to make themselves almost perfect. Because perfection is impossible, but every day, you get closer to perfection.’ We can see how St Pierre thinks with this quote. He is always looking at ways he can get better, striving for perfection.

Though perfection is not attainable, every day he gets closer to it. This way of thinking enabled St Pierre to reach the pinnacle of mixed martial arts. By always looking at how he can develop, he became better.

Proving this when he stepped foot into the octagon. You must always look at what you can do better to improve each day. Keep focused and continue to work hard and you will one day reach your dreams!

St Pierre is one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. His journey is inspirational, and we can all learn from his mindset. This led to him being able to reach the heights he did.
